Hunting & Fishing in Kentucky

Kentucky has quietly become one of the South's premier hunting states, with a whitetail herd that produces trophy bucks rivaling the famous Midwest. Hunting guides in Kentucky work the western farmland and the eastern Appalachian foothills, and the state's strong elk restoration program in the southeastern coalfields now offers a limited but genuine elk hunt east of the Mississippi. Spring turkey hunting across the state is excellent.

Fishing in Kentucky is anchored by two of the largest man-made lakes in the eastern United States. Outfitters and fishing charters on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley chase largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, and catfish, while the Cumberland River tailwater below Wolf Creek Dam holds trophy brown and rainbow trout. With more navigable water than nearly any other state, Kentucky keeps anglers busy year-round.

Top Hunting & Fishing Regions

Land Between the Lakes

A peninsula between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley offering public deer and turkey hunting plus a vast charter scene for bass and crappie.

Eastern Kentucky Coalfields

Reclaimed mountain mine land in the southeast is the heart of Kentucky's elk zone, where a limited draw offers true Eastern elk hunting.

Cumberland River Tailwater

The cold water below Wolf Creek Dam grows trophy brown and rainbow trout, with float-trip guides working the river year-round.

Western Kentucky Farmland

Productive crop country near the Ohio and Mississippi rivers grows heavy whitetails and supports guided waterfowl hunting.

Tips for Hunting in Kentucky

  • Apply for the Kentucky elk lottery through the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources; it is one of the few elk tags available in the East.
  • Fish Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley in spring when largemouth and crappie move into the shallows to spawn.
  • Hunt the Land Between the Lakes public area during the quota hunts, which limit pressure and improve quality.
  • Float the Cumberland tailwater with a guide who tracks dam generation, since flows control the trout bite.

Did you know? Kentucky's elk herd, restored starting in 1997 on reclaimed coal-mine land, is now the largest east of the Mississippi River.
